During the past two years God has been leading Flushing UMC to become a church of small groups. Small Group Communities began meeting for Module #1 in January of 2010. Module #2 began meeting in April of 2010. Our unique model for Small Group Communities here at Flushing UMC is continually prayer over, explored, examined and evaluated. Becoming a church of small groups will always be a work in progress. Here is an overview of the Small Group Community model at Flusing UMC, with Module #3 beginning September of 2010.
A place where people feel welcomed, wanted, and safe
An environment that promotes openness and honesty
A place of intentional personal spiritual growth and numerical growth as new members are invited into the group, with the understanding of the possibility that the group may divide to maintain a small group size
A place to receive prayer and support
Confidential – what happens in small group stays in small group
A place of intentional attendance and participation
Primary vehicle for discipling to take place
A place where disciples intentionally put their relationship with Jesus Christ first and foremost in their lives
A place where disciples encourage and support one another to live faithfully after the teachings and example of Jesus Christ
Cliquey, elite or unsafe
Overpowered by one person or one person’s opinions
Exclusive or closed
An accountability group
A center for gossip
